IN SOME PLACES THEY ARE PRESENT AT LEVELS THAT CAN HAVE AN ADVERSE IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH OR THE ENVIRONMENT AND IMPEDE THE PRODUCTIVE USE OF THE LAND OR WATER.

PLANNING CONSENT AUTHORITIES NEED INFORMATION ABOUT SITES KNOWN OR SUSPECTED HISTORY OF POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATING ACTIVITIES TO BE ABLE TO DECIDE WHETHER THE LAND IS SUITABLE FOR AN ALTERNATIVE USE, SUCH AS RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL DEVELOPEMENT

THEY MUST BE SURE THAT ANY RISKS POSED BY ANY CHEMICALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT ARE ACCEPTABLE AND THE LAND IS SUITABLE FOR ITS PROPOSED USE.

A ENVIRONMENT CONSULTANT WOULD NEED TO BE ENGAGED AND SIL SAMPLES TAKEN TO ANALYSE THE PROPERTY FOR LEVELS IF ANY OF POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CHEMICALS AND A REMEDIATION PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED TO CLEAN ANY LEVELS OF CONTAMINATION FOUND TO AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL FOR ANY PROPOSED USAGE OR DEVELOPMENT.
